Christmas Time Outdoor Lighting Ideas

There is perhaps no season more associated with outdoor lighting than the Christmas/New Year season is. It does not matter whether or not you have a professionally installed outdoor lighting system installed or not, any home can partake in this but having an outdoor system installed can take your outdoor display from festive to magical. Today we detail some simple options to help make your property more festive with holiday outdoor lighting.

Lights can cover almost anything

Twinkle lights can be added when the leaves fall off of a tree by wrapping string lights around a tree. For good symmetry make sure that the lights only go to a certain height no matter how tall the tree. Lights can also be used to wrap objects in the yard to bring a rustic appeal. Old or weathered surfaces can provide a stark contrast with the less organic surfaces around the property. Such items can include nearly anything from a bicycle to a wagon to a kayak.

String lights, twinkle lights or icicle lights can potentially be placed on nearly anything and many now have LED bulbs. Some are even battery operated so no extension cords are required removing one extra lawn hazard.

Glass can enhance the ambiance

You can be extremely creative in placing outside. Any glass object that can hold a bulb can potentially be used and when placed close to the ground it can bring a glow to your lawn that will be hard to ignore. Even an empty wine or beer bottle works well.

Light can enhance safety

With all of the light it is also easy to forget about where you will walk. It would be a good idea to light up any paved walkway or bushes near those walkways. A few string lights can be or walkway lights can be all that is needed to keep people on the right path. Wrapping hedges, bushes or trees can be a daunting task and net lights might be your best bet.

Light may not always be best

In some cases placing lighting on something may not be the best idea. Large wreaths or other holiday symbols could be best left unlit as the backlighting of the home could provide the proper amount of lighting for the piece.

Timers and Timing

It should hopefully go without saying but nighttime is the ideal time to view any holiday light display. Turn the lights on at sunset and watch as the vibe changes as the sun goes down. Don’t forget to have everything on a timer to make sure that they are turned off during the day if just to save on the electric bill. It may also be a good idea to turn off or turn down some of your normal outdoor lighting as it can interfere with the holiday lighting. It may take some trial and error to see what works but if done properly your home will be the star of the neighborhood.

Non-Electric Ideas

Some outdoor lighting options do not even require electricity. Moravian stars can be made or bought (some are LED also) and placed in trees and with proper spacing can help create a glow and break up the steady light coming from the home.

For some the illumination of fire is always going to outshine (pun intended) any electric light and let’s face it, it does look pretty awesome. Any glass vessel can potentially be used to hold a candle though empty wine and beer bottles work well for thinner candles and extra ambiance can be created with any luminous object. Just don’t forget to blow the candles out when you are done. If you don’t want actual fire LED candles can work almost as good.

Outdoor lighting can make your property stand out 365 days out of the year but the holiday season is truly the time to shine. With more darkness your outdoor lighting will be in use more than it is during the other seasons so why not get the most out of it? Get yourself in the festive mood and and add some festive spirit to your property!
