Outdoor lighting enhances our house features. The lights add value to our property which makes our home more inviting not just to us but also to our guests—needless to say, to our neighborhood. Furthermore, it keeps us safe and secure at night.
On the other hand, our responsibility doesn’t stop after the installation of the outdoor lighting. The lights will do their job to make our home or property aesthetically beautiful and safe, but to make it last long we have to do our part. To make our outdoor lighting stay at its best and function for a long period of time, we have to properly maintain it.
Why Should You Invest In Outdoor Lighting Maintenance?
It is understandable that the word ‘maintenance’ may keep you tired just thinking about it as you assume that it requires a lot of work and requires additional expenses. However, that’s not the case. You might ask yourself, why do you need to do the maintenance for your outdoor lighting?
You should look into the bright side of it. The answer is simple as to why maintenance is needed—to save you time and money.
Doing proper maintenance for your outdoor lighting means that you’re keeping it in its pristine condition—to make it last longer and for it to continue working properly—as it should. Depriving your outdoor lighting of popper maintenance would eventually cost you more time and money. Thus, it might come to the point that you’d have to replace all the lighting because it all got broken due to negligence. And you don’t want that, do you?
Outdoor Lighting Is Made To Last Longer
To set the record straight, outdoor lighting is made to withstand the elements outdoors and to work for a long time. It is more capable compared to indoor lighting as it can withstand the temperature change and moisture outside.
On the other hand, it still needs proper care. The weather outside is always unpredictable—seasons change, storms come and go, and insects might cause some trouble too. This is why it is required for routine maintenance for your outdoor lighting, typically once a year (but may vary).
Routine maintenance can prevent costly repairs and keep the lights shining for the coming years.
Tips To Keep Your Outdoor Lighting Functioning Well
- Clean The Lenses
Lenses can become coated with dirt, stains from water residues, mud, fallen leaf, and insects. These things can block the lighting from illuminating. Removing and/or wiping off the lenses (using the proper solution and cloth) would improve and lengthen the light of the fixtures.
- Clean Around The Light Fixtures
It’s not just the lenses that you have to clean but the fissure itself and its surroundings. Over time, the grass surrounding the fixtures grows which is also one of the factors why the strength of the lighting illuminates seems to get weak. Cut or trim the grass as this can also accommodate dirt.
- Check The Wires
Check the cables and wires of the fixtures are still properly connected, there’s no damage, and not exposed. You can bury the wiring in the ground to hide it and minimize the clutter. Use a protective tube for wiring before burying it as insects and/or animals may bite it which causes a lot more trouble. Furthermore, burying the wires also prevents any trip hazards.
- Check Fixtures
Check the lights and fixtures for any damage and replace them as needed. LED lights burn out over time, it’s normal. The simple solution is to replace them. Check if it is still under warranty as it will save you a lot of money.
- Check The Fixtures’ Positions
The position of the fixtures may get out of alignment over time. No need to fret about this because some reasons why it gets out of alignment are; harsh weather, accidental bumps, changes in landscaping, and due to weather conditions.
- Check The Breaker Box
Check the breaker box if all is well, double-check the flip switches, check if all are connected to the wiring and nothing’s broken to avoid a short circuit. If you’re unsure, call a professional to assist you.
